Dr. Mark Indrek Reichman, a certified specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery who practises in Vancouver, has admitted to inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour towards a patient.

The investigation of a patient complaint by the College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) resulted in a citation (notice of hearing) against Dr. Reichman. A discipline hearing had been scheduled but was cancelled when Dr. Reichman admitted to professional misconduct.

Dr. Reichman made admissions and proposed a resolution under s. 37.1 of the Health Professions Act. The Inquiry Committee considered Dr. Reichman’s proposal and approved it. The terms of the resolution are as follows:

  1. He will be suspended from practice for a period of four months, which will commence on 1 July. The suspension may be reduced to two months contingent upon completion of two professional ethics-based courses as noted below;
  2. He must complete two professional ethics courses before returning to practice, followed by a third course to be completed in one year’s time at his own expense;
  3. He will receive ongoing psychological counselling at his own expense;
  4. He will be chaperoned when he sees patients at his practice, with conspicuous signage in place advising of this restriction on his practice;
  5. He will not see patients alone at any hospital or facility where he has privileges;
  6. A fine in the amount of $20,000 to be paid to CDSBC; and
  7. $10,000 to be paid to CDSBC towards the cost of the investigation.

In three years’ time, Dr. Reichman may apply to have the restrictions removed from his practice.

The Inquiry Committee order was finalized on March 11,  2015.
