Illegal Practice: Wei Ming (Margaret) Du

Wei Ming (Margaret) Du prohibited from practising dentistry

Vancouver, B.C.

April 28, 2015

The College of Dental Surgeons of BC has taken legal action against Wei Ming (Margaret) Du for practising dentistry contrary to the Health Professions Act and regulations. Ms. Du has never been registered as a dentist with CDSBC although she formerly held certification with CDSBC as a certified dental assistant.

CDSBC began an investigation after being contacted by a member of the public. The investigators conducted surveillance at Ms. Du’s residence at 1381 East 34 Avenue in Vancouver. Based on information gathered through surveillance, CDSBC received permission from the Supreme Court of British Columbia to conduct a search and seizure at the residence. An interim injunction was also issued that prohibited Ms. Du from practising dentistry.

Our investigators, with the assistance of local police, carried out the search and seizure at Ms. Du’s residence on June 23, 2014. We seized extensive dental material and equipment from the residence. No patient records were discovered.

On March 31, 2015, Ms. Du signed an agreement not to perform dentistry and prohibiting her from using any name or title (in any language) that implies that she is a registrant of, or associated with, CDSBC.

Anyone who sees an illegal practitioner puts themselves and their family at risk for bacterial and viral infections. There is no assurance that the practitioner is competent or qualified to provide treatment, or that the materials and equipment they use are safe.

CDSBC advises any person who has been treated by an illegal practitioner to consult with a physician and visit a CDSBC-registered dentist to review the work done and the materials used. More information for patients of suspected illegal dentists is available here.

To check the registration status of a dentist in B.C., you can look them up on the College’s Registrant Lookup.
