Sedation Standards and Guidelines Revisions: Emergency Equipment/Drugs

The Minimal and Moderate Sedation, Deep Sedation, and General Anesthesia Sedation Standards and Guidelines have been revised to include the following emergency equipment requirement:

Emergency equipment and drugs must be consolidated and stored in a well-organized, self-contained, mobile unit (cart or kit) at a centralized location that is readily available at all times. Drugs must be current and readily identifiable. The emergency cart or kit will contain all drugs and equipment necessary to perform emergency procedures. An emergency cart or kit must be present in each facility before any procedure is commenced. Emergency carts or kits must not be shared with other facilities when sedations are performed. The emergency cart or kit must be present until the patient is discharged from the facility.

The revised sedation and anaesthesia Standards and Guidelines documents have been published on the College website on the Sedation and Anaesthesia page.

San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program

In 2017, all of BC’s health regulators signed a Declaration of Commitment to Cultural Safety and Humility. The declaration is endorsed by the Ministry of Health and the First Nations Health Authority and has been signed by all of BC’s health authorities. The Board supports the declaration and its principles, which includes promoting the value of cultural safety training to the professionals we regulate. More information is available in the progress report on the first year of the commitment.

The Provincial Health Services Authority has developed a facilitated online training program designed to increase knowledge, enhance self-awareness, and strengthen the skills of those who work both directly and indirectly with First Nations and Aboriginal people. The online training program is eligible for CE credits.
